A Bipartisan Majority of Virginia's House Delegation Now Favors Protecting VA Streams From Mountaintop Removal Waste
This month, Democratic Congressman Tom Perriello (VA-05) excited Virginia mountain lovers by joining 145 other members of Congress in cosponsoring the Pallone-Reichert "Clean Water Protection Act" (HR 1310). HR 1310 would overturn a Bush Administration rule change which allows toxic waste from mountaintop removal sites to be dumped directly into headwater streams in Appalachia. Mountaintop removal, as you may know, has already destroyed over 1 million acres in Appalachia and over 30 mountains in Virginia, and may soon be coming under intense scrutiny from the Obama Administration. Congressman Perriello taking the pro-mountain position means that a majority of Virginia's Congressional delegation has officially taken a stance against the horrific practice of mountaintop removal.
Virginia cosponsors of the Clean Water Protection Act include:
1) Congressman Jim Moran (D-VA-08)
2) Congressman Frank Wolf (R-VA-10)
3) Congressman Bobby Scott (D-VA-03)
4) Congrsesman Gerry Connolly (D-VA-11), and now...
5) Congressman Tom Perriello (D-VA-05)
Others in the Virginia delegation, including Senator Webb and Congressman Wittman have spoken out against mountaintop removal but have taken no official position on the Clean Water Protection Act (HR 1310) or its Senate counterpart, the Appalachia Restoration Act (S 696).
