Virginia State Delegate Adam Ebbin today condemned the recent efforts by Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli to undo key Federal environmental standards put in place to combat global warming.
"Once again, Ken Cuccinelli has put his partisan political goals ahead of the needs of Virginia families. In opposing Federal efforts to protect our environment, Cuccinelli is displaying the sort of blind fervor that has defined his tenure as Attorney General. At a time when Virginians are looking to the government of our Commonwealth for protection from real criminals, Ken Cuccinelli is focusing his efforts on dead-end lawsuits and political posturing," said Ebbin.
Attorney General Cuccinelli recently filed a brief in Federal court challenging the Environmental Protection Agency's efforts to regulate carbon dioxide emissions. Scientific research has shown that carbon dioxide is a key contributor to the recent increase in global temperatures. The EPA's efforts to combat global warming will help Virginia protect its coastlines from rising sea levels. Other EPA regulations support efforts to improve air quality in Northern Virginia.
"If we're to have breathable air in Northern Virginia, we must clear the air in Richmond by stopping Ken Cuccinelli's brazen abuse of his office. I am proud of my efforts to rein in our Attorney General. In the Senate, I will continue to fight Cuccinelli's attempts to put his radical political agenda ahead of Virginia's true priorities," said Ebbin.
Earlier this year, Delegate Ebbin filed HB 2468, which would have curtailed the ability of the Attorney General to file civil actions without the prior approval of the Governor or the General Assembly. In the House of Delegates, Ebbin has been a recognized leader on environmental issues, and has been named a "Legislative Hero" by the Virginia League of Conservation Voters. He was recently awarded the Chesapeake Climate Action Network Clean Energy Champion Award.
